Fonts

Typography is a fundamental part of your brand, and not something we take lightly. To ensure that your Ease Live graphics stay true to your vision, our design tool lets you upload all your own web fonts – or just add what you need from the Google Fonts library.

Your project's fonts are managed in the Preferences view, by clicking the cogwheel button in the menu bar. Any fonts you add there are immediately available for use in your text layers. Next to your individual font weights you can also see how many times they have been used, to help you keep the total number of used fonts under control.

Why is that important? We are glad you asked!

A quick note on web fonts

Ease Live uses modern web technology to render your graphics, so the general best practices for web typography also apply here. Most importantly: before your users can see your beautiful fonts, they have to be downloaded to their device. The quicker that can be done, the better their experience will be. So as a general rule, we recommend that you:

  1. Stick to a limited number of fonts and weights, to reduce the total download size. Note that only the fonts you actually use in text layers matter here. You can upload/add as many as you like.
  2. Always provide .woff2 versions of your fonts. They are much smaller than equivalent .otf and .ttf files. These are included when you purchase a web font, or can be generated on sites like Font Squirrel.

Formats

Although .woff2 is the best format for the web, we recommend that you also include .woff and .ttf versions. Each user will just download the best format their device can handle.

We also support .otf, so you can get started with whatever you have on hand, and add other formats later. But again, they are several times larger than .woff2 files, so you want to provide those before you go live.

Uploading custom fonts

To upload your fonts, simply drag the files into the custom fonts drop area – or click it to open the file picker. Font files will be grouped by their font family, weight, style and width (condensed/expanded/etc).

If you upload a format that already exists for the same family and weight, the existing file will be overwritten.

Adding a Google font

Adding Google fonts is just as easy: Just click the dropdown in the Google fonts section of the preferences, and start typing to find the font you are after.

Note that for Google fonts, only the weights you are currently using are listed in the UI. To see the full set of available weights and styles, click the X styles link below the font family name.
